Emmett's Story

I decided in 2006 to get a puppy to train to be an animal assisted therapy animal. At the time, I was working with children with Down syndrome and found the even-temperament of St Bernard's highly appealing for working with children with disabilities.

I was about to say yes to a breeder in Canada when I decided to Google, "special needs St Bernard puppy." I came across a blurry picture of a two week old puppy. He was too young at the time to gage what his temperament would be, all that was known was that his right front leg would need to be amputated. The umbilical cord had wrapped around his leg, causing his limb to be pink, raw and smaller than the rest.

The family, who lived in rural Pennsylvania cared for him tenderly, hoping to find him a home instead of seeking the alternative of euthanasia.

Being a "giant breed" is not a small feat for any pooch, but to do it on three legs is miraculous. Dogs carry 70% of their weight up front, and being a deep-chested breed, his prognosis looked grim.

I knew exactly how physically and emotionally draining it would be to bring Emmett all the way here to Oregon, but I knew that I was meant to be his owner. What I did not know, is how much he would inspire not only myself, but many, many others. Emmett is loved by all who know him.

As a big sister to a brother with a disability, I have always advocated for the acceptance and inclusion of all, regardless of ability. Bringing Emmett into my life has magnified my desire to lend a "paw" in the fight for occupational justice and the opportunity for all to engage in the life that they dream.

There is no greater teacher in this world than a floppy lipped, flecked faced pooch, who shares his story with others through his jovial spirit and vitality.

He is my Emmett-- "Emmett the Great".

Dear Emmett's Mom - I wanted to thank you so much for posted the story on Emmett the tripod St. Bernard. I have been surfing the internet to see if anyone else had a tripod St. Bernard, and to my relief we finally found one (Emmett). Why the search? Last May (2007) it came to our attention of a short hair St. Bernard needed adopting … he was found as a stray by the Seattle Humane Society. He was five months old at the time, and had a severely deformed right hind leg (x-rays should it being a femur fracture that healed badly). Since it was useless, it was amputated by the Humane Society. He then went to a foster family, who cared for him post operation. It is through the foster family that we became aware of Burly. We met him, and fell in love with the big guy and adopted him. He is now 11 months old, and weighs 101 pounds. Our Vet tells us that having a missing hind leg, is a much preferred limb to be missing in a large breed … as you know they carry so much more of their body weight in the front. He is fortunate to be able to lead a very normal life with our other dogs, and mobility seems not to be an issue for the big guy (except on smooth surfaces – his hind foot will lose traction). He runs in the yard, rough houses with the other dogs, navigates stairs with no problem. It made my heart fill up with joy seeing Emmet living a full and wonderful live … and now know Burly will have the same!

Thank you so much for being an insperation.

I am fostering and taking care of a baby Saint with a deformed front leg that will need to be amputated when she is old enough. I got her at 2 weeks of age and I am bottle feeding her. She has doubled her weight in only 1 1/2 weeks! Her name is Angel. I would love to hear from Emmett's mommy! shercon4@sbcglobal.net

Dear Emmett's mom - You are an inpiration foresure. I have a 4 year old St. Bernard - Sara. She is my baby. I've only had her a year and she has a bad right front leg and no one can figure out what is wrong with her. She has been limping since I got her, some good days and some bad, but they are all bad now and she hardly uses it now. One vet thought it was a popped disk so they treated her with steriods, but that didn't do anything. One thought it was a bad shoulder, they've done numerous x-rays and exames, but have come up with nothing. I know she is in pain, she wimpers alot, it's heartbreaking. I'm getting a feeling from my vet that it will be a matter of time before this injury wears her down and she will get depressed. Knowing that Emmett was able to function on 3 legs, especially one front leg, it reassures me that I can somehow immobilize her bad leg, in hopes to allow it to heal while not in use. Not sure how to do that yet, but I'm sure going to try.

Just wanted to say that I love your blog and that your handsome dog Emmett is the splitting image of our 180lb St. Bernard named Emmett who had hip dysplasia and also needed a wheelchair. What a treat it is to see you doing your work with your Emmett. Thanks so much and keep it up.

I get more channels(in HD I might ad) than I get on cable so tomorrow I reckon I'm going to cancel my cable subscription. Thought I'd share this with you guys, worth to check out.

The French gourmet cheese Bleu d'Auvergne has a wonderful aroma, a rich taste; the saltiness increases with the incidence of veining. The overall flavor is piquant but not overly sharp. Bleu d'Auvergne started life as an imitation of Roquefort, using cow's milk in place of sheep's milk. Legend has it that a peasant, around 1845, decided to inject his cheese with a blue mold that he found growing on his left-over bread (the motto being, waste not, want not). And thus, the gourmet cheese Bleu d'Auvergne was born. This French gourmet blue cheese comes from the region of Auvergne and the cheese is made from milk of Salers and Aubrac cows. The rind is very thin and so the cheese is usually wrapped in foil. The cheese is rich and creamy with a pale yellow color and scattered holes and well-defined greenish-blue veining. We cut and wrap this cheese in wedge of 8 ounces and 1 pound.

Thank you for sharding your story! We have an 11 month old Saint who will eventually have her leg amputated due to a growth plate deformation at birth.
